When the President appeared in front of the nation to deliver his very last State of the Union address, we were reminded of how much has changed in the past seven years (or even just the past year!), warned about what might happen if we don’t take an inclusive, tolerant approach to our fellow humans, and given hope for a better world with a detailed plan for what Obama plans to do in his last year as President. Obama covered a whole hell of a lot during his speech, so it was definitely easy to miss some important stuff. For example, he once again reminded Americans of how important it is that we not blame Muslim people for the horrifying actions of ISIS, saying “democracy does require basic bonds of trust between its citizens.”
He also suggested that we work together with other countries rather than separate ourselves like Donald Trump would have us do to help the situation with Syria. He made sure to remind us that we have done tons of positive things, explaining that “we’re on our way to end the scourge of HIV/AIDS,” which reminded us how great we are. Perhaps most importantly, he revealed “the worst kept secret in Washington”: that people in Congress want to work together but fear upsetting their party. He urged that to change, and said we need to “reduce the hand money plays in our politics.” Bravo!
One thing you can’t read in the transcript? How gorgeous Michelle Obama looked on Jan. 12. She stood strong behind her husband while we all listened intently. Regardless, it’s definitely worth a read if you need some information and inspiration. Obama said “we want to make it easier for people in America to participate.” So start participating, and check it out!
