It’s time! The Alabama Crimson Tide have fought their way to the College Football Championship. Now, all that stands between them and the title is the Clemson Tigers, but college football expects expect the Tide to roll to victory. Before the two teams clash, get to know more about Alabama and why they’re the odds-on favorite.
1. They got their name from the Alabama mud.
The team used to be called “Varsity” or the “Crimson White,” after the school’s colors, according to RollTide.com. The team earned the nickname the “Thin Red Line, which was used until 1906. That game was played in the red mud, thus earning the team its colors and its moniker.
2. The Crimson Tide has a lot of gold.
Alabama has a total of 15 national titles, according to SB Nation, and Clemson has only one. Nick Saban, the current head coach, has led the team to three BCS National Championships – in 2009, 2011 and 2012. Prior to that, legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant led the team to one Orange Bowl and four Sugar Bowl victories. On top of that, the team has won 29 conference championships.
3. Their defense is scary good.
The Crimson Tide has the nation’s best defense, being ranked No. 1 in every category but passing downs defense (which they are No. 3,) according to CBS Sports. The Tide allows only 74 yards per game while on the ground. And the saying is “offense wins games — defense wins championships.”
4. A Heisman Trophy winner leads their offense.
Derrick Henry is 6’2 and 242 pounds. The Alabama running back has also rushed for over 2,000 yards and has scored 25 touchdowns, per the International Business Times. This is why Derrick is the 2015 Heisman Trophy award winner, and he’s just a college junior! Along with Jake Coker, a solid quarterback, the Crimson Tide are set to run up the score on the Clemson defense.
5. Alabama may not be perfect, but the team is still impressive.
In the 2015-16 season, Alabama only suffered one loss. They fell 43-37 to the Ole Miss Rebels in Sep. 2015, but after that, they didn’t lose a single game. While they are not perfect like the 14-0 Clemson Tigers, the Crimson Tide are considered the favorites, especially after blowing out the Michigan State Spartans in the 2015 Goodyear Cotton Bowl. Alabama breezed by, according to FBSchedules.com, with a score of 38-0.
