The disses keep coming! Ricky Gervais took no prisoners in his monologue at the 2016 Golden Globes, slamming Sean Penn for his controversial interview with fugitive drug lord El Chapo. Did Ricky go too far with this insult?
Ouch! If you’re in Ricky Gervais‘ crosshairs at the 2016 Golden Globes, don’t expect to get off easy! The Golden Globes host referenced the Rolling Stone piece, which dropped on January 9, that landed Sean Penn in hot water for interviewing fugitive Mexican drug cartel leader, El Chapo. Read on to hear how Ricky dissed Sean!
During his opening monologue at the 2016 Golden Globes, held January 10, Ricky acknowledged that his history of insulting celebrities was likely going to catch up with him during this show — his fourth time hosting. He wasn’t going to hold back, and he was going into hiding after the awards show was over. So deep into hiding, in fact, that Sean Penn couldn’t find him! Yikes!
The remark was met with awkward laughter; Sean is currently under investigation for the Rolling Stone interview with El Chapo, which took place in October 2015 in the Mexican Jungle after a long correspondence. The extremely powerful, violent drug lord, who headed the largest cartel in the world, was currently on the run after escaping from prison in July 2015. El Chapo was arrested on January 8, the day before the magazine piece ran, after a long police chase. CLICK HERE to buy one of Ricky’s hilarious comedy specials!
Sean wasn’t the only person Ricky went after in his monologue. He referenced three-time hosts Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, saying that he made the same amount of money as them for their hosting duties — no reason to worry about the wage gap, right? Well, they had to share that money. Okay, that’s terrible!
