The address, which will be made by President Obama from the Oval Office on the night of December 6 at 8:00pm EST, is an opportunity to update the nation on the situation in San Bernardino, California, in which two terrorists who pledged allegiance to ISIL killed 14 and injuring 21 others. A speech from the Oval Office is a rare occurrence, meaning this address is an important one. The speech is set to address “the nature of the threat, how it has evolved, and how [the nation] will defeat it.” Click through to watch his address.
“[President Obama] will reiterate his firm conviction that ISIL will be destroyed and that the United States must draw upon our values — our unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and freedom — to prevail over terrorist groups that use violence to advance a destructive ideology,” the White House said in an official statement on their website.
It has been more than five years since President Obama used the Oval Office to address the nation; that time it was to announce the end of US combat operations in Iraq. In this address, Obama is expected to take a “just the facts tone,” according to a senior administration official who spoke to ABC News. He’ll provide an overview of what the government is doing to prevent and stop homegrown terrorism — like what was seen in San Bernardino — and what they’ve learned after this attack.
As previously learned by the FBI, the San Bernardino attack was not a direct order from ISIL, but carried out by two supporters. The address will aim to assuage fears and a anxious public that ISIL is not in the United States. “As president, my highest priority is the security and safety of the American people,” President Obama said in his weekly address on Saturday, December 5. “This is work and should unite us all — as Americans — so that we’re doing everything in our power to defend our country.”
