‘The Vampire Diaries’ Recap: Lily Sacrifices Herself For Damon

The gang tried their best to kill Julian without any problems, but the Dec. 3 episode of 'The Vampire Diaries' ended in heartbreak. Lily made a shocking sacrifice for Damon that will change everything. The Vampire Diaries just dropped one heck of a twist on the Dec. 3 episode. Caroline (Candice King) finally told Stefan (Paul Wesley) about her pregnancy, Enzo (Michael Malarkey) made one last declaration of love to Lily (Annie Wersching), Julian (Todd Lasance) forced Lily to choose between Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Valerie (Elizabeth Blackmore), and she ended up doing something no one saw coming.

The big plan was that Julian needed to die — today. And he couldn’t find out that Lily had turned on him. Lily, Damon, Stefan and Enzo were all involved in the plan. They had to get Julian’s blood and get the heretics to unlink him from Lily. Enzo didn’t think it would be that easy to turn his little minions against him.

So the only other option they had involved Valerie. She was ready to tell the heretics about what Julian did to her and Stefan’s baby. The party that Julian and Lily were throwing for Nora and Mary Louise would be the perfect place for this plan to go down.

In between her pregnancy cravings, Caroline spent some quality time writing to Elena. It what would have been a very awkward moment if Elena were around, Caroline told Elena about the twins. Matt called her for some help, and she told him she was really pregnant. The catch? She hadn’t told Stefan yet.

Meanwhile, Enzo was still on the Lily train. He asked her to run away with him. Mystic Falls wasn’t safe, and he wanted to protect her. They shared a steamy kiss in the library, which Future Bonnie would totally disapprove of. Benzo fans, ignore this.

That Awkward Moment

Caroline was ready to tell Stefan about her pregnancy, but Damon and Valerie interrupted him. Valerie knew what Caroline had to tell him, so she left them alone. Stefan was shocked about the “baby transplant,” to say the least. He avoided the conversation they needed to have to make sure the plan to kill Julian went off without a hitch.

Julian got Mary Louise and Nora’s party started early, biting people’s necks and whatnot. Lily was not please with Julian’s recklessness. Later, Julian gave Mary Louise a gorgeous ring to give to Nora. She was clearly still on Team Julian. Lily gave Nora a sentimental gift as well. Julian wanted Lily to pledge her loyalty to him, and she nearly crossed the line into total darkness.

Damon caught a whiff of this, and this didn’t help their already tense relationship. Damon told Lily that he didn’t care if she was still linked to Julian, he would kill Julian no matter what. She slapped him right across the face. He said he wished he could have left her in the prison world. Damon, why you gotta be so mean?

‘You Were The First Woman To Break His Heart’

On a lighter note, Mary Louise asked Nora to marry her. That’s when Valerie showed up. She told the girls about the baby. They were floored. Lily said Julian killed the baby for her in a sick and twisted way. She would have never gone to Europe if she had known about her grandchild. Lily confessed to the girls she was leaving Julian.

Damon and Stefan cornered Julian. They started to attack him, even at the expense of Lily’s life. After Julian was tied up, Lily and Stefan had a nice talk. He was much more forgiving than Damon, but Stefan told Lily that Damon just needed time. “You were the first woman to break his heart,” Stefan told Lily. Mama Salvatore didn’t think there was anything she could do to change Damon’s opinion. Stefan reassured her that Damon would come around. He had gotten the same look from Damon countless times.

Stefan FINALLY called Caroline. He apologized for sort of avoiding her after the pregnancy reveal. Caroline said she understood if he wanted to stay away, but Stefan wasn’t going anywhere. He told her that he loved her for the first time. He promised he would be there for her no matter how “weird” things got. Caroline thanked him for sticking by her by telling him that she loved him, too. Aw!

Goodbye, [SPOILER]

Mary Louise came in and ruined Team Salvatore’s plan to kill Julian. She snapped Valerie’s neck and incapacitated Damon. Julian tried to force Lily to choose between Damon and Valerie. She had to kill one. Damon believed she would choose her heretics over him. He begged her to kill him. That’s when she stabbed herself. She thought by sacrificing herself she would kill Julian, but they had been unlinked!

Stefan told everyone that they had to say their goodbyes to Lily. She was a goner. Julian ran and threw a fit at the Salvatore house over Lily’s death. Death was slowly creeping up on her, and Valerie told Damon to make the most of Lily’s last moments.

“You made your bed. Have a nice nap,” Damon spat in Lily’s face. In the future, Damon was in chains in the newsroom. Lily showed up. Damon had been poisoned with werewolf toxin and would die if he didn’t get help. Damon took a moment to apologize to Lily for how he had acted in the past. But it wasn’t Lily. She really was dead, SO WHO IS IT?!

Elsewhere in the episode, Nora gave Mary Louise the ring back after fighting over Julian and Lily. Matt and Enzo got into a tiff. Matt was super sassy this episode and really got under Enzo’s skin. “Damon didn’t want you, Lily didn’t want you, this town didn’t want you — what are you still doing here?” Matt asked Enzo. He got Enzo locked up and introduced him to his new friends, which remained nameless. Oh, Matt, what have you done?!
