NBC’s ‘The Wiz’ airs live December 3, and if the hair and makeup looks are anything to go by, you don’t want to miss it! From Queen Latifah’s two-toned hair to Mary J. Blige’s dark smokey eye and metallic lip — see all of the most elaborate looks.
For the third year running, NBC is airing a live musical performance of a Broadway favorite. This year’s show of choice, The Wiz, has a star-studded cast that includes Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige and Ne-Yo, and the modern spin on the classic The Wizard Of Oz calls for futuristic hair and makeup looks.

Starring as Dorothy, Shanice Williams‘ look didn’t require heavy contouring, dark smokey eyes or bold lipstick, but the actress’ curls still got an on-trend twist with a few streaks of bright blue in her hair. Easing on into the bolder looks, Uzo Aduba, who plays Glinda, got a gorgeous gold smokey eye and golden curls to match.
As The Wiz, Queen Latifah’s look required much more drama with silver hair that was streaked with emerald green and the metallic makeup to match (it almost looked like she had decided to go for a contoured look but forgot to blend it in). Amber Riley‘s good witch, Addapearle got a bold blue beauty look that included dark blue hair and a cotton candy blue lipstick.
Finally, Mary J., who played Evillene, was made up in our favorite look from the show. Her Wicked Witch of the West makeup called for a super dramatic purple smokey eye with an exaggerated black cat eye and a metallic plum lipstick. To complete the look, her hair was styled into a braided updo with an elaborate crown.

Husband and wife duo Dave and Lou Elsey were behind every makeup look for the show, which included a lot of makeup special effects in addition to the crazy, colorful looks. In an interview with HattiesburgAmerican.com, Dave spoke about the challenges of working on a live televised show: “Half the job is maintaining. You stick the makeup on, and that’s one thing. But making it last for a performance is a whole other kettle of fish. If there’s a second where we can get to the actor when the camera’s not on them, we’ll be in there.”
