John Murphy has been one of the biggest mysteries in the second season of ‘The Leftovers,’ but wait until you hear what actor Kevin Carroll told about his not-so-neighborly character!

Kevin Carroll‘s character, John Murphy, has been telling quite the story on HBO’s The Leftovers. However, the mystery behind John explains not only why he is so intimidating to others, but also why he fights so hard to remind people “there are no miracles in Miracle.”

“John was stripped of his innocence very early on by someone he trusted,” Kevin Carroll, the man behind John Murphy, told in an EXCLUSIVE interview. “I think a part of this will always be a part of John’s unrest in his life. While John was not protected early on in life he may be driven to make sure that no one else is taken advantage of.”

We also asked Kevin to explain what John’s actual “job” is, since it’s clear he’s doing much more work than fighting (ahem, starting) fires. “John has a duty in and to this community. Besides working as a volunteer fire fighter, working for John is remaining vigilant,” Kevin explained. “Making sure he has a sense of who he and his family are surrounded by. John wants to feel safe as do most people who are dealing with a world where this departure has happened. Everyone may have a slightly different connection to a need for safety but nevertheless in our world it is that is essential.”

As for John’s fight against everyone’s belief that miracles are happening in Miracle, Texas, well, the answer to that isn’t as difficult as the rest. In short, Kevin reminded us that if miracles were happening in their town, John would have never been taken advantage of as a child, and his wife (played by the incredible Regina King) would still have her hearing, and so on and so forth.

Despite John’s neighborly facade and the dark, damaged nature hiding beneath the surface, Kevin told that it’s not hard to balance these aspects of John on-screen. He said, “I bring as much of the humanity that I can find to the process and somewhere in the process we get a glimpse into the lives of these people in Miracle.” Make sure to follow Kevin on Twitter @kevintcarroll for more updates from the actor.

Don’t miss the season two finale of The Leftovers on Sunday night, Dec. 6 at 9pm ET only on HBO!
