Lara Croft is an iconic character in the video game universe, but up until recently, her popularity had dwindled. However, when the franchise was rebooted in 2013, ‘Tomb Raider’ once again became a game people got excited about. And it’s recently released sequel has only raised the bar for its competition!
Camilla Luddington (Grey’s Anatomy) is back as Lara Croft in Rise of the Tomb Raider, a new sequel in the rebooted version of the super successful video game franchise. And not only did the actress have to overcome nearly hyperventilating while doing voiceover work for the new game, but she discussed the challenges of juggling her roles as Lara Croft and Jo Wilson on Grey’s during an EXCLUSIVE interview with HollywoodLife.com.
Believe it or not, Camilla spent five years in total recording the two most recent Tomb Raider games. And during that time, she overcame a lot of challenges, which she shared with HollywoodLife.com.
“I think I spend a lot of time in a voiceover booth dying over and over again, in the many ways that [Lara] can die. And it’s exhausting. I’m always like, ‘Can I get more tea?’ because my voice actually starts to go. But one of the hardest things is actually — she’s in a very cold climate. She’s in Siberia. So there’s times when she has hypothermia and just breathing like you’re freezing, you start to hyperventilate. So I have to take time between recording those moments because you literally start to feel like you’re getting dizzy,” Camilla told HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY.
Camilla, who didn’t really know she was auditioning for Tomb Raider when she read for the part of Lara Croft, is one of the hardest workers in her field. While filming Grey’s, Camilla would dedicate her nights and weekends to doing voiceover work for Lara. She has barely had any time to herself in the past five years, but the two jobs are very different from each other, as she discussed the differences with us.
“I think the biggest difference is — I do motion capture for the character — and the biggest difference is that we film in this giant room. And there’s no real set on Grey’s Anatomy. Obviously, it looks like a hospital, but it takes a lot of imagination to actually feel like you’re in an OR. But for Tomb Raider, they can’t build a forest of a cliff or something like that. They actually just have blocks and kind of tell you what they symbolize. You’re really forced to use your imagination to create that world around you. And that actually makes it super fun because your imagination can be really strong and powerful. Plus, I got little sketches to show what things would kind of look like, but that’s probably one of the biggest differences,” she added.
Tomb Raider and Grey’s Anatomy are obviously very different, but we love them both equally. And if you’re a huge fan of Lara Croft, then you need to pick up a copy of Rise of the Tomb Raider. If you ask us, it’s honestly the best game to come out of the franchise. Click here to buy it now!
