Country music had quite the night at the American Music Awards on Nov. 22! Up against some TOUGH competition, Sam Hunt won New Artist of the Year, and those who weren’t already swooning over him definitely are now. Get to know the up-and-coming country star here!
Sam Hunt had all the ladies fan-girling when he accepted the award for New Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards on Nov. 22, and with an incredible year behind him, the best is yet to come! As his career continues to skyrocket, here are 5 fun facts about the “House Party” singer that will help you get to know him better.
1. Before music, he was almost in the NFL!
While we know him for his smooth vocals now, Sam actually started his career out as an athlete! He played quarterback for two years at Middle Tennessee State University and two years at University of Alabama at Birmingham, and after graduation, even got to play at the Kansas City Chiefs’ training camp. Unfortunately, he was unsuccessful in impressing the team, which led him to Nashville to pursue his love of songwriting.
2. He’s written hits for some of the biggest stars in country music
Sam just made a splash as a singer in the past year, but before that he started out with a great career as a songwriter — you’ve definitely heard some of his hits on the radio, too! The 30-year-old wrote Kenny Chesney’s “Come Over,” Keith Urban’s “Cop Car” and Billy Currington’s “We Are Tonight.” Just some of our favorite country songs…NBD!
3. He’s been unstoppable since releasing his first single in 2014
“Leave The Night On” was Sam’s first big solo hit, and it remained a force on the country music charts for months after its summer 2014 release. The follow up singles, “Take Your Time” and “House Party,” also shot to No. 1, and his current hit, “Break Up In A Small Town” is well on its way.
4. This isn’t the first time he’s been recognized as a hot new artist
Sam also won New Artist of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2015, as well as at the Taste of Country Music Awards. Additionally, he will be recognized as one of only five country music superstars at CMT’s Artists of the Year ceremony on Dec. 2, along with HUGE stars Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton, Little Big Town and Florida Georgia Line. That’s some pretty good company!
5. He’s already part of one of the biggest country music tours of 2016!
Miranda Lambert is joining forces with Kenny Chesney for a massive stadium tour in Summer 2016, and Sam landed quite the hot gig as opening act for the show. These singers are two of the biggest names in country music, so the fact that they wanted him to join them on the road is definitely a big deal. He also toured with Lady Antebellum and Hunter Hayes in 2015, so things are definitely going good for this guy!
