If you hadn’t heard about soul sensation Leon Bridges before his epic AMAs performance alongside Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, you’ll definitely know his name after Nov. 22. Now that he’s gained attention following the dramatic awards show appearance, let’s find out more about him.
Leon Bridges, 26, is on a roll. He’s had a breakout year in 2015 after being discovered online in the fall of 2014. Already his voice is being linked to soul legends of the past like Sam Cooke, with one of those voices that comes along once in a generation. Now that he’s caught your attention thanks to his duet with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, at the AMAs, let’s get to know a little more about Leon!
1. He was washing dishes and playing open mike nights in the Ft. Worth, TX area when he hit it big.
The Ft. Worth, TX native had a job washing dishes while he wrote and recorded his music on the side. He posted his work to the internet in hopes of getting attention.
2. He got his big break thanks to the internet:
When the trend-making website Gorilla vs. Bear took notice of his work in Oct. 2014, their glowing reviews made record companies take notice. A month later he signed to Columbia records after a heated bidding war.
3. Leon says he never grew up listening to classic soul music
“It’s crazy — I didn’t grow up with any of this music,” he told Billboard magazine in an interview in June 2015. “All this shows that you can’t teach soul music. 4. He has impeccable throw-back fashion sense.
He’s known for his classic old-school fashion, with ’50s style looks that include crisp slacks, starched collars and well pressed shirts, high-waist jeans and absolutely perfect vintage suits, in both his videos and live performances.
5. You’ll be hearing plenty more from Leon during December 2015.
He’s booked a guest appearance on Saturday Night Live, and wrote a song for Will Smith‘s upcoming Oscar contending film Concussion.
