Barbie just made history! The famous doll company broke down gender stereotypes with its ad for the new Moschino Barbie by featuring one awesome little boy and people are going crazy over the groundbreaking move! Watch the ad here!
After Mattel and Moschino teamed up to make possibly the world’s most fashionable Barbie of all time, the two companies also looked to change Barbie’s female-oriented reputation by including a boy in its ad for the first time ever! But the 30-second ad didn’t just feature the little boy — he was the star! Read more about the story behind the history-making ad below!
Sporting a black-and-white striped top and funky mohawk, the little boy adorably declares that the Moschino Barbie is “so fierce” and places a black and gold purse on the Barbie’s arm. Barbie fans around the world rejoiced over the little boy’s appearance in the ad, as a boy had never been featured in an ad for the doll in its 56-year history. Plus, the ad totally shuts down the stereotype that boys don’t play with dolls, which is perhaps the biggest statement Mattel has ever made!
While Mattel created the ad, it was actually Moschino designer Jeremy Scott who had the idea to include a little boy. In fact, Jeremy cast the featured little boy to represent himself as a kid!
“When I dreamt up the concept for the Moschino Barbie fauxmercial, I felt it was natural to have a little boy representing for all the little boys like myself who played with Barbies growing up,” Jeremy told BBC. “Barbie was more than a toy, she was a muse for me.”
Although the video is a “fauxmercial” that Mattel created to parody Barbie commercials from the 1980s, there’s certainly nothing fake about its message. Moschino told ABC News that the doll and its ad “shows us how you can be anything you want to be and that no goal or dream is too big.”
The stereotype-defying ad has clearly had the impact Jeremy, Mattel, and Moschino were hoping for — the doll sold out within an hour of becoming available! Now that the little boy has shown it’s totally cool for boys to play with Barbies, we’re thinking Moschino Barbie won’t be the only one sold out in the near future!
