News broke on Nov. 16 that Charlie would be making a personal announcement on The Today Show the following day and, on Nov. 17, he confirmed that was in fact HIV-positive. Speaking with Today anchor Matt Laurer, Charlie said that, “I’m here to admit that I am in fact HIV-positive.” He also added that the point of this multi-part sit-down interview was to put the rumors to bed. “I have to put an end to these [lies],” he said.

Moving forward, Charlie acknowledged that, “it’s a hard three letters to absorb,” however, he thinks he has a purpose with his status, and plans to use his condition for the better. “I have a responsibility now to better myself and to help a lot of other people,” he said.

Charlie also assured Matt that he has contacted every person he’s had sex with, following his diagnosis. “Yes, I have,” he said. “No exception.”
