It’s not every day that someone wins a title fight with a unanimous decision, but Joanna crushed it so hard that there couldn’t possibly be another outcome! Joanna walked away with scores of 50-45, 49-46 and 49-46 from the judges. Though many had expected a greater outcome for the strawweight titleholder (really?), she nevertheless beat Valerie by a clear margin, and walked away with her title intact.
Her total strikes were 250 to 127, according to Fightmetric; she was able to get a bevy of blows in at Valerie, including jabs to the face and abdomen. A kick straight to the face, already in the first round, was a visibly stun to Valerie. Joanna’s constant leg kicks were what sealed the deal in this fight. By the end of the third round, Valerie’s eye was swollen shut, and she was wavering. But Joanna wasn’t really phased by anything that happened during the fight, and you know, neither was Valerie!
“I said Valerie was going to be a tough opponent,” Joanna said. “You’re not going to always win easy, you know? I always want to fight the best and Valerie deserved the opportunity completely. I expected a long fight, five rounds.”
“To be honest, nothing really surprised me,” Valerie said. “She did exactly what I thought she was going to do. I’m just — I didn’t respond as good as I wanted to.”
