Simon Cowell was feeling the wrath of One Direction fans this week after he make an offhand joke about not missing Zayn Malik’s presence in the band. Now he’s made an apology after the 1D world exploded with Twitter hate on the group’s manager! Check out what he had to say.
Simon Cowell, 59, should know by now how insanely invested One Direction‘s fans are in the group. Many of them are still smarting from Zayn Malik‘s abrupt March 2015 departure from the boy band, so it’s a little too soon to be making jokes at his expense! Now Simon is having to apologize after being bombarded with hate from 1D’s fans, who didn’t find any humor in his Nov. 2 awards show quip about not missing the 22-year-old’s presence in the group! Here’s his explanation of how it went down:
“Well I just kind of thought while I was standing on stage with them (1D) that they were back to being five. And I just sort of saw myself in One Direction for a moment, and that’s when I made that quip which of course backfired hugely,” Simon said in an interview on Fresh 102.7 New York’s Trey & Ghia Show Nov. 6. “I apologize to any Zayn fans out there. It was meant as a joke.”
Simon offended Zayn’s huge fanbase while accepting an award from the now-quartet. While the 1D boys handed him with the prestigious Music Industry Trusts Award, he drunkenly accepted it and said in his speech, “Just by luck I get the award I’ve been wanting all my life and I’m completely hammered. Guys, who misses Zayn?”
Apparently a lot of people do, Simon quickly learned, as word of the quip spread to 1D fans who were totally outraged! Many took to their Twitter accounts to hate on music mogul for his remarks and praise their beloved Zayn. Needless to say, Simon got the message that not everyone thought his joke was funny. So messages received and lesson learned from Simon!
HollywoodLifers, did you find Simon’s joke about Zayn funny? Or was it just too soon for him to be doing that?
