The ‘Project Runway’ finale is SO soon — and we got to catch up with designer Kelly, who filled us in on how she handled the response the judges had to her finale collection, right before New York Fashion Week.
Kelly Dempsey‘s vibrant, Studio 54-inspired collection was full of bold colors and sequins — and while she attempted to tone down the looks, the Project Runway judges actually told her to turn up the dial with all the glitter. Although they had a lot to say, Kelly said the ‘harsh’ critiques weren’t all bad. Read on to see how she felt about the shocking response.
“I would have to say I was surprised with how harsh they were, but I’m down with it,” she said. “I don’t look at it as a negative thing. I didn’t expect them to be so harsh for everybody.” While the judges were definitely tough, it was the final push most of the designers needed before the big show. “My mindset was the same thing I had before the critiques, times 10. It was the last one before New York Fashion Week. I had no problem with them giving me a harsh critique, because if they said ‘that’s great’ it won’t make me better,” she said. “I totally appreciate them getting into it. They have faith in us and know we can really bring it.”
The critique wasn’t the only time Kelly found herself shocked on the show! She could not believe Edmond was eliminated after the red carpet challenge. “I was definitely shocked, and they kept us on our toes. I was hoping he [Tim Gunn] would use his save for Edmond,” she said. “He has tried out since Season One and he deserved it! I was so excited for Edmond.”
Like Kelly, we were beyond thrilled when Tim Gunn came through with the save — and we can’t wait to see the four amazing collections on the runway at New York Fashion Week! While her designs may be bold and bright, she said filled us in on the celebs she would love to dress. “I would definitely say Katy Perry,” she said. “My last look for the red carpet, inspired by Katy Perry, I sort of envisioned her with that…or even Rihanna,” she said. “That urban vibe I really like.”
