Zendaya was NOT happy with a magazine that dared photoshop her drastically to make her appear thinner. The body positive feminist shared a side-by-side shot of the changes to express just how angry she was.
Zendaya Coleman, 19, had a bone to pick with Modeliste magazine after they drastically, and noticeably, photoshopped her in a recent spread. The outspoken feminist took to Instagram on October 20 to share her anger about the alterations to her figure, and why it’s so important to depict her body as is. The feisty female is not being held back!
“Had a new shoot come out today and was shocked when I found my 19 year old hips and torso quite manipulated,” Zendaya wrote on Instagram. “These are the things that make women self conscious, that create the unrealistic ideals of beauty that we have. Anyone who knows who I am knows I stand for honest and pure self love. So I took it upon myself to release the real pic (right side) and I love it😍😘”
The K.C. Undercover star shared the photoshopped pic from Modeliste side-by-side with the unaltered photo. The difference was shocking. In the edited photo, Zendaya’s hips and thighs are impossibly slim, even a little bit smaller than her whittled-down torso. She looked incredibly tiny, which is strange; she’s already a petite person. Even weirder: the magazine altered the color of her skin, and didn’t do a very good job. She’s got an orangish-tan glow — everywhere except her entire left leg.
However, Zendaya’s impassioned statement met the magazine’s ears. They removed the pictures, which she recognized in her message. “Thank you @modelistemagazine for pulling down the images and fixing this retouch issue.”
Intelligent, beautiful and gracious. She’s a truly remarkable young woman. This is far from the first time that she’s gotten vocal about protecting young women from unrealistic beauty standards, and slamming gross dudes who project that onto them. She proved that she was a total boss after defending YouTube makeup artist Shannon C, who showed off her bare face — which got terrible male follower to share a side-by-side of her in makeup, and dare call her ugly.
Zendaya responded in the best way possible: “@Manstagram_ that awkward moment when this tweet is irrelevant cause she’s slaying both ways #wannaborrowmyglasses.” Our hero!
