Great news! Even though Selena Gomez has had her fair share of setbacks because of lupus, doctors agree that the singer can have ‘a normal life’, and even go on tour, as long as she ‘takes care of herself with a healthy lifestyle.’ HollywoodLife.com has all the EXCLUSIVE details!

After Selena Gomez, 23, bravely revealed that she had to undergo chemotherapy to treat her lupus, we couldn’t help but wonder if the singer can live a normal life. HollywoodLife.com spoke EXCLUSIVELY with top doctors who specialize in this chronic disease and they explained how the famous brunette can live a healthy life with “a holistic approach.”

“Selena can go on a tour if she takes care of herself with a healthy lifestyle, which includes no cigarette smoking, a healthy diet, decreased stress and a strong support group,” Dr. Bonnie Bermas, M.D., Director of Brigham and Women’s Hospital Lupus Center tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY. “If she has good management of her health, she can lead a normal life. However, patients can have lupus flares-ups, and when this happens they need to take time and modify their activity.” What a relief that Selena can still go on tour!

Doctors also recommend alternative ways of strengthening and healing the body. “There is a role for holistic living, not over doing it and staying away from greasy, bad for you food. Yoga is advised to control stress. Aerobic exercise is vital to keep the heart healthy,” Dr. Swamy Venuturupalli, M.D., F.A.C.R., Diplomate, American Board of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology & Co-Chariman of the Advisory Committee of Lupus L.A. tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY.

“It’s unfortunate that Selena has come down with this, but it’s important for her to speak out because there are many people who are suffering silently. The problem with this is that many afflicted with Lupus don’t look sick, but they are suffering. They are tired a lot, fatigued, and have a mental fogginess, where they can’t connect the dots — they feel achy. That’s a big challenge. I think people are ashamed of having Lupus and we need to change this. We need to come out and be part of the solution,” Dr. Venuturupalli says.

Selena Gomez With Lupus: How She Can Still Live A Normal Life

As HollywoodLife.com previously reported, Selena had to undergo chemotherapy to treat her lupus. “Lupus is an autoimmune disease. This is a condition when the immune system attacks its own body. In the more serious cases of Lupus, the immune system can start attacking the internal organs, such as the brain, the liver and the kidneys. This is when chemotherapy is used as a treatment to slow down the production of these immune system cells. Chemotherapy is only used in most severe cases of Lupus,” Dr. Swamy Venuturupalli further explained to us.
