When you’re about to tackle one of the greatest songs ever recorded, you go to the best to help you! Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder closed out the Global Citizen Festival with Beyonce by his side, absolutely nailing a beautiful cover of ‘Redemption Song.’ Rock royalty!
What better way to make your soulful rendition of “Redemption Song” the perfect cover than by inviting Beyonce onstage for an intimate duet, and singing the hell out of it! Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, 50, closed out the raucous Global Citizen Festival in Central Park on September 26 with a slow and sweet version of Bob Marley‘s iconic song that was only made more amazing by Queen Bey’s gorgeous vocals.
You don’t necessarily think “Eddie Vedder and Beyonce” when you’re imagining the greatest duets of all time, but these two might have just changed that! Eddie teased the audience, as the last act of the Global Citizen Festival, by sitting onstage all by his lonesome, just a guitar in hand. But there was an empty seat available next to him: for Beyonce!
Queen Bey walked out to explosive applause and cheers, matching Eddie’s signature grunge garb with just a Global Citizen Festival tee and a pair of cute jeans. This was going to be a low-key number, after all!
Take a moment to just listen to them! You can’t help but focus on Beyonce’s amazing pipes as she sings her heart out, but Eddie’s slaying, too! What an incredible way to end the massive festival that brought so many acts — and people — together!
Their gorgeous cover kept the integrity of the long-revered Marley ballad, the story of a man who has been persecuted for many years, but has overcome it all through his faith — and gives others the advice to mentally free themselves from their own bonds. It’s an incredible, powerful song (the last Bob recorded before his death), and to hear Beyonce and Eddie cover it, truly did it justice.
