Goonies never say die! Fans have been wondering if Sean Astin will return for the highly-anticipated ‘Goonies’ sequel for months, so did Sean just announce he’ll be reprising his role? Check out his tweets!

It’s always a good day to be a Goonies fan! Sean Astin, 44, a.k.a. Mikey Walsh from the 1985 classic film, may or may not be returning for The Goonies 2. The Lord of the Rings star tweeted (and then deleted) some pretty epic news about the film. Was it just a joke, or could it be real?!

“I have said and will always say, that it’s not a question of if, but rather of when the sequel gets made,” Sean told TulsaWorld.com. Well, The Goonies 2 is happening — eventually. Screenwriter Chris Columbus has said he’s already working on it.

On Sept. 26, Sean sent fans into a tizzy when he tweeted and then deleted this tweet:

Maybe it was just a joke, or maybe just wishful thinking. After deleting the tweet, Sean followed up with, “Mis-speaking on Twitter? Even when one delete’s the Tweet (hate doing that), faux pas live on #GooniesSequel #Magic8BallSaysSomeday.”

Here’s hoping that “someday” comes soon! It wouldn’t be a Goonies movie without Mikey! Sean has hinted before that he would be on board for a sequel, but he understood if the sequel writers didn’t want to use the original cast. No matter what happens, the originals Goonies will remain a classic forever.

“It’s bigger — it’s actually bigger than everybody,” Sean said in his interview. “It’s bigger than even Steven (Spielberg), who created it. It’s bigger than Richard Donner, who breathed such strong life into it. It’s now a part of American cultural lore, and the studio has a lot to gain from promoting it, so you can take it to the bank that people will get to enjoy it more.”
