Uh oh! Is Madonna throwing shade at Pope Francis? The iconic singer recently dedicated a song to him on her Rebel Heart Tour by calling him ‘Popey Wopie.’ Click inside to WATCH!
Madonna, 57, took a moment on Thursday night, Sept. 24, while performing at her Rebel Heart Tour in Philadelphia, Penn. to discuss all of the hype surrounding 78-year-old Pope Francis‘ visit to America. However, she made sure to remind her fans about her tumultuous relationship with the Catholic church before calling the Pope a slightly inappropriate pet name. Ouch.
“I’ve been excommunicated from the Catholic Church three times. It shows the Vatican really cares,” Madonna joked with her sold out crowd about Papal’s upcoming visit to their city. Then she dedicated her song “La Vie En Rose” to him, claiming that she believed it was love that makes the world go ’round. Even better? Before calling him “Popey Wopie,” which seems like nothing but shade, she tells her fans that there really isn’t much of a difference between her and the Pope. Um, sure, Madonna… whatever you say!
However, it really does seem like she might just be having some fun. “Rules are for fools. That’s why I like the new pope. He seems very open-minded,” Madonna also said during her speech about Papal, complimenting his more liberal sense of style. Too bad these two didn’t meet during his visit!
