Okay, you got me, Shonda Rhimes. When Patrick Dempsey’s Derek Shepherd was killed off last season, I thought it pretty much spelled the end of the show. I was sad and hurt. However, after watching the Sept. 24 premiere, I realized I was so, so wrong.
Honestly, I didn’t think I was even going to be watching Grey’s Anatomy this season. I thought I was done with it. I thought Derek Shepherd’s death was my breaking point after grieving over George (T.R. Knight), Lexie (Chyler Leigh) and Mark (Eric Dane). Being the TGIT fan that I am, I watched the season 12 premiere of the medical drama. I became hooked again instantly and finally realized that Ellen Pompeo was right: she doesn’t need McDreamy.
Grey’s Anatomy has this uncanny ability of reinventing itself after you think its gone south. The cast looks a lot different from when the show first started, and it still manages to be good. McDreamy’s death was the moment I started to reevaluate my love for Grey’s Anatomy. I mean, how could you kill off Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey)? How will Meredith able to handle another loss in her life?

I still don’t think it was something that had to be done, and I’m still appalled at how Meredith reacted to Derek’s death considering how torn up she was when she thought Derek was going to die in the shooting episode. But I digress. It’s over. It’s done with. Derek is gone, and he’s not coming back.
The season 12 premiere was my first taste at a Derek-less season. By the end of the show, I was in tears. Shonda made me fall back in love with a show I thought I’d left behind for good. From the heartbreaking story of two young girls who were willing to take their lives to be together to Bailey’s epic speech for Chief to April’s return, it was all-around great episode.
Shonda Rhimes revealed that this season is going to be a “throwback” to the first season. Well, I got chills when I saw with my very own eyes that she was right. After years of shocking, devastating deaths, the show has returned to its fun, sexy roots that got us all hooked in the first place.
Shonda, I love you for many things — Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, Crossroads — and I should never underestimate your power for amazing storytelling. As much as I do miss McDreamy, I’m genuinely excited for the uncharted territory ahead.
HollywoodLifers, what did you think about the Grey’s Anatomy season premiere? Do you still miss McDreamy? Let me know!
