‘Dancing With The Stars’ should be renamed ‘Dancing With The Paramedics’ with Kim Zolciak joining a long list of celebrities to end up being hospitalized while participating on the show. For the stars, the intense physical activity has caused plenty of injuries over the years and we compiled the worst of the bunch.
Kim Zolciak, 37, suffered a mini-stroke after returning home to Atlanta after her Sept. 22 Dancing With The Stars performance. She’d already tweeted about painful feet from rehearsals before the competition began, but her scary situation following the show caused her to lose all feeling on the left side of her body, and she was temporary left unable to speak. She joins a growing list of celebrities who have brutally suffered for the sake of ballroom dancing.

Back problems have plagued contestants over the years. In season 18, Billy Dee Williams, 78, announced on air that he would be withdrawing from the competition due to chronic back pain. The same condition forced Olympic ice skating champ Dorothy Hamill, 59, to withdraw after the second show of season 16 on the advice of her spine surgeon that she could suffer irreparable nerve damage if she stayed in the competition.
Jackass star Steve-O, 41, injured his back during dress rehearsals two hours prior to a live show in season 8. He landed on his microphone pack and was taken to the hospital as a precaution, suffering from back spasms and a pinched nerve. Another star to suffer a back injury was Melissa Rycroft, 32. She was rushed to the hospital in season 8, diagnosed with a disc herniation at the C4-C5 level of her cervical spine.
Actress Danica McKellar, 40, and double amputee pro-snowboarder Amy Purdy, 35, both suffered rib injuries in season 18 of the ABC hit. The stars toughed it out though and remained in the competition. Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, 68, had stress fractures in both feet and was forced to drop out after 3rd episode in season 9 and Melissa Gilbert, 51, hit her head in season 14, and was hospitalized with mild concussion and whiplash.
Bill Nye “The Science Guy” was hurt in in season 17. The 59-year-old suffered a badly torn tendon in his leg after tripping up on his pants during his live performance. Cristian De la Fuente, 41, ruptured a tendon in his left bicep muscle in season 6 while Olympian Misty May-Treanor, 38, had a Achilles tendon tear in season 7, forcing her out of competition.
Not even the pro dancers are immune from injuries. Kym Johnson, 39, injured her neck during rehearsals with partner Hines Ward. She was taken away on a stretcher but returned to the show and the pair eventually won season 12. And finally, five time champ Derek Hough, 30, was taken out of the competition in season 20. He suffered a broken toe and ankle injuries after hitting his foot on a piece of equipment. Phew, that’s a LOT of injuries!
HollywoodLifers, are you shocked by the number of stars injured on DWTS?
