A baby has been kissed! There was a heartwarming welcome for Pope Francis as he arrived for the first time in America. Aside from greeting the packed crowds, he blessed a handful of kids and babies — and even kissed one lucky child. See our gallery of cute pics!
One lucky baby received the first official kiss from Pope Francis on Sept. 23 in D.C. It’s been almost a year since he made his big announcement that he would travel to the United States for the first time. He arrived on Sept. 22 for his six-day sweep through Washington, New York and Philadelphia — and got right to work.
Pope Francis made quite the splash on his first visit to America. Not only did he touch the heart of millions as soon as he touched US soil, but he went one step further. He is known for lovingly engaging with crowds, especially young children and babies.
While being escorted around Washington in his white Jeep Wrangler, the Pope made his first official kiss. His security grabbed a precious baby from the crowd and ran the child over to the Pope’s vehicle. He planted a sweet kiss on the child’s head and continued on his way. Minutes later, he blessed his second child. So amazing.
During this visit, he will be blessing countless babies and children with sweet kisses on the tops of their heads. It’s funny to see the little ones mixed reactions to the experience, with some ranging from smiles to tears to others being downright bewildered.
The Pope’s Visit To America
The Pope met with President Obama, which was a big deal seeing as though he was just the third pope to meet with a president while visiting America. After leaving D.C., he flew to New York City from the evening of Sept. 24 through Sept. 25 where he held a special mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and at Madison Square Garden. He also had a huge procession through Central Park.
