After the first night of Blind Auditions, all four coaches on ‘The Voice’ had two contestants on their team, and the claws were out (especially between Adam Levine and Blake Shelton!) on episode 2 as the celebs fought to land the best singers. Read our full recap here!
Adam Levine, Gwen Stefani, Blake Shelton and Pharrell were back at it when the Blind Auditions continued on Episode 2 of The Voice. Season 9 is off to a great start, and the talent just keeps getting better and better — catch up on what went down in the Sept. 22 episode with our recap!
Kicking the night off was “Blind Joe,” who, yes, is blind. Of course, when he started singing, and the chairs were facing the audience, the coaches had no idea. Instead, his voice did all the talking, and all four coaches opted to turn their chairs, with Pharell and Gwen joining in at just the last minute. But from the second we saw Joe’s cowboy hat it was pretty obvious who he’d pick — Team Blake, of course!
Next up, a returning contestant! Ivonne Acero didn’t get a chair to turn on Season 8, but she didn’t give up, which is what we LOVE to see, and she was back to give it another go. This time, she performed a unique rendition of Taylor Swift’s “Style,” which immediately prompted Gwen and Pharrell to push their buttons. Ultimately, Ivonne went with Pharrell. “He’s so cute that they can’t not pick him!” Gwen complained. Awwww!
Gage Navarro was next to take the stage, but unfortunately, none of the judges turned around for him. Hopefully he takes the constructive criticism like Ivonne did and comes back again next year! Up next and hoping for better luck, radio host Regina Love was ready to bring her outgoing personality to the show. Her powerful performance got Adam and Blake to turn around, and after lots of groveling from both singers, Regina ultimately picked the Maroon 5 frontman as her coach.
Cue another country act! Zach Seabaugh — who’s just 16 years old!! — surprised absolutely no one by choosing Blake, even though Adam and Pharrell both fought HARD. There’s just no breaking up that “Country Mafia” as Gwen likes to call it! 20-year-old Evan McKeel performed next and all four coaches pushed their buttons. Even when Pharrell put him on the spot to sing a Stevie Wonder song, Evan didn’t falter, and everyone was totally blown away, especially Gwen, who was brought to tears! It wasn’t enough, though, and instead it was Pharrell who added Evan to his team.
Next up, Bryan Bautista, who gave an amazing performance, but it just wasn’t enough for the judges. Another country singer was up next, but Emily Ann Roberts admitted before taking the stage that she’s a fan of both Adam and Blake, so this one wasn’t automatically in the bag for the “Sangria” singer. Once again, the bros were the only two to push their buttons, which lead to another epic head-to-head….but Adam still wasn’t able to nab a country crooner from his pal.
Ellie Lawrence sang a totally original version of “We Don’t Have To Take Our Clothes Off” when she took the stage next, and immediately captivated Adam, Pharrell and Gwen. Considering Ellie’s amazing reaction when she saw Gwen turn her chair, it wasn’t much of a surprise that she chose the No Doubt singer, giving Gwen her first artist of the night, almost an hour and 40 minutes into the show! But, as we saw in a quick montage, she also landed singers Noah Jackson, Tim Atlas and Hannah Ashwood as the episode went on.
The second to last performer of the night was Natalie Vacovazzi, and although she belted out her rendition of “Oh Darling” nearly flawlessly, she failed to get the attention of any of the coaches. Finally, closing things out was James Dupre, another country singer, who has actually appeared on Ellen DeGeneres’ show before, leading to a record deal, which he was eventually let go from. Before taking the stage, James admitted that he wanted to pick Blake, but his four sons all love Adam, and when all four judges turned, it resulted in the night’s biggest battle! AND FINALLY, Adam’s wish came true and he landed a country singer over Blake — woo!
So, at the end of Episode 2, Gwen added 4 singers, Blake nabbed 3, Adam took 2 and Pharrell got 2, bringing their totals up to 6, 5, 4 and 4, respectively. The fun continues next Monday, Sept. 28, at 8 p.m. — check back then to see what goes down!
