‘The Mindy Project’ is as on point as ever. In the Sept. 21 episode, we saw Mindy finally have her baby — though not in the way she ‘expected’ she would!
In the latest episode of TMP, Mindy (Mindy Kaling) and Danny (Chris Messina) can’t agree on where, or how, Mindy should give birth. Mindy wants drugs and a c-section in a luxurious, celebrity-frequented “birthing suite”, while Danny wants her to do it the old-fashioned way. Of course, it didn’t turn out how either of them wanted!
Mindy, like many reasonable humans, dislikes pain and wants the birthing process to go as smoothly as possible. So she books a birthing suite (“Everyone from Bethenny Frankel to Tina Fey has been here”) and tries to convince Danny that a 5-day blissful coma along with a cesarian is the way to go.
Danny instantly hates the idea and employs the expertise of holistic doctor Duncan (Mark Duplass), to trick Mindy into giving birth the traditional way. With the help of Duncan’s book titled Paleo Birth (ha!), he feeds Mindy spicy food and makes out with her. She’s not thrilled when she figures out what he’s up to, and delivers this golden line: “Were you trying to boink the baby out of me?!”
‘C Is For Coward’: Mindy Lahiri Is Stronger Than She Thinks
Of course, she ends up going into labor while stuck on the subway, and Danny runs down the tunnel to board her stopped train car. He makes it at the last second and Duncan delivers Mindy’s baby. It’s hilarious, if a little obvious — I knew where it was going as soon as I saw Mindy riding the subway, which, hello, she basically never does. Danny helps her through it by letting her know she’s the strongest woman he knows, and she triumphantly bears the pain.
The ending of the episode, like all good rom-coms involving a birth, features a radiant Mindy cradling her new baby, named Leonardo (to reference DiCaprio or da Vinci, depending on which parent you ask), and a proud Danny leaning over them. It’s totally cute and I admit to squeezing out a few happy tears. I ship them so hard, you guys.
