It was a question on everyone’s lips at the 2015 Emmy Awards: why exactly did so many people accessorize with a bright green ribbon? Were they corsages from Kermit? A gift from host Andy Samberg that he’d make a crazy sketch out of later? It turns out the real reason was truly impactful.
One of the biggest stars of the night at the 2015 Emmy Awards wasn’t an actor, writer or director; it was the green ribbon shown on nearly every person’s lapel or dress. The mystery of the strange little ribbons was finally solved after some sleuthing: it was all about raising awareness around climate change!
The little green ribbons were all stamped with #DemandClimateAction if you looked really closely. Stars from Veep, Transparent and so many other shows were rocking the ribbons, that promoted a new campaign from the the National Resources Defense Council.
The council has put together a petition online to get world leaders to face climate change for what it is, and do something about it as soon as possible. That petition will be delivered in front of a major summit in Paris in December 2015.
By wearing the ribbons, stars stood up and said that they supported the movement to support and celebrate the Earth, and do everything they can to save it from more harm. What a worthwhile cause! Green ribbons are actually used for many awareness campaigns: cerebral palsy, kidney cancer, and mental illness all use a green ribbon as the symbol of their cause. But at the 2015 Emmy Awards, the environment was the reason for bringing out the tiny awareness symbols.
