From the outside looking in, Fashion Week is super glam — front row seats, designer clothes and endless celebrity-filled parties. For me, and many other editors, it’s also a lot of coffee, cabs, late nights and early mornings. Read my Fashion Week diary below.
As the Beauty Director at HollywoodLife, I cover about 30 backstages every season during NYFW. Through the endless eyeshadows, curling irons, hairsprays and polishes, I pick out trends to help you emulate your favorite celebrities and models. This year, I had a secret weapon — Rihanna‘s new fragrance, RiRi by Rihanna, kept me smelling sweet and feeling empowered all week long. My first show was ZAC Zac Posen, which kicked off Fashion Week on Tuesday, September 8. I spotted Rumer Willis in the front row and knew immediately which flirty dresses would look great on her.
On September 10, things really started to heat up. I had 8 shows on my calendar, with the first one, BCBG, opening backstage to media at 8am. Since all designers have different sponsors, not all shows are in the same place. This season, many were next to Madison Square Garden, while others were downtown at Milk Studios and Chelsea Piers. Shows were uptown, downtown, east side, west side. I wouldn’t be surprised if Uber saw a spike in business this week. Just before leaving my apartment around 8am, I spritzed my fave new scent for fall — RiRi by Rihanna – all over my BCBG dress.
I love to apply fragrance in my hair and behind my knees so it continues to emit scent all day, especially when I’m running around. After BCBG was Erin Fetherston, Desigual, Marissa Webb, and Creatures of Comfort. In between shows, I was trying to prepare for an interview with John Legend that I would have later that night. Around 12 hours later, I could still smell a hint of my RiRi, but I gave myself one extra spritz to impress John (Kidding! Obsessed with his marriage to Chrissy Teigen).
RiRi By Rihanna Perfume — My Signature Scent For NYFW
The next day, I was running a little late for Jason Wu, which was at the same time as Kate Spade. I threw the travel sized perfume in my bag, and it ended up being my favorite (and super handy) NYFW companion! So cute and pretty, it matched perfectly with my fit and flare Kate Spade skirt. The KS presentation was a highlight — tons of pink, bows and sweet treats (champagne and mini doughnuts) — just like RiRi’s ad campaign!
On Saturday, I ran into our Fashion Director, who was on her way to the Herve Leger show. She complimented my fragrance so I let her have some — she was instantly hooked. It will be a great gift for her birthday next month!
Sunday I had a quick brunch with some co-workers before heading back to the shows to see Prabal Gurung. Kylie Jenner showed up wearing a sexy sequin suit and created quite the mob on the runway! After Prabal, I went to an after party to see Beyonce’s sister Solange DJ. For the party, I wore Rihanna’s previous fragrance Rogue, a bit of a more edgy, sexy scent.
Tuesday was my busiest day — I flew between Vera Wang, Alice + Olivia (my favorite overall beauty look – tons of gold by Stila Cosmetics), Milly, Narcisco Rodriquez and a few more. Luckily, I felt totally fresh, confident and trendy wearing the gorgeous RiRi perfume, which has sweet notes of passion fruit extract, rum absolute, orange blossom, exotic Jasmine, pink freesia, Madagascar vanilla and Indonesian sandalwood. It’s perfect for daytime and reminiscent of the spring / summer clothes I was getting to see on the runway.
J. Mendel is always my last show of the season, on Thursday. While hailing a cab to the show, I was pleasantly and ironically surprised to see my fave bad gal RiRi right there on top of the cab.
Do you follow the trends during New York Fashion Week, HollywoodLifers? Until next season!
