Donald Trump is at the top of everyone’s mind, so of course Tina Fey had to ask Mindy Kaling what she thinks about the GOP candidate during their talk at 92nd Street Y on Sept. 16. You know that one comedy writer interviewing another can only result in hilarity — see what Mindy had to say about The Donald!
Mindy Kaling, 36, has kicked off a whirlwind promo tour for her new book, Why Not Me? Aside from doing the usual talk show circuit, it made total sense for comedy legend Tina Fey, 45, to interview her in New York City. The “conversation” was basically two hours of nonstop jokes and interesting anecdotes about the biz, with a few touching moments mixed in. At one point, the talk became a series of college party games, and “Would You Rather?” and “Boff, Marry, Kill” have never been more entertaining. Trust Tina Fey to push the envelope during what could have otherwise been a wholesome, harmless interview about Mindy’s second book. The conversation turned to Donald Trump and Tina asked Mindy her opinion of him. “Would you make out with him?” the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star asked. “100 percent!” Mindy exclaimed, only half-joking. She elaborated that she really would do it “for a few hours”. Tina then asked Mindy if she preferred Trump or Bill Cosby, and though Mindy never answered, Tina threw out a quip: “With Cosby, you could sleep through it.” The payoff was huge, as the laughter and applause was thunderous.
Tina was always the perfect candidate to interview Mindy, though she joked that she won the job “in a contest” among 1,000 applicants. They’ve each run their own shows on both network TV and streaming services — Netflix for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt; Hulu for The Mindy Project — and have written memoirs (Mindy’s first was Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?). They kickstarted their careers on NBC, and are now leading ladies at the top of their field. The stars aligned to get them in a room together for one magical evening, and the audience was under their spell the entire time. It was one of the greatest nights of my life, anyway. I really hope my pet name for their friendship — Tindy Feyling — catches on.
HollywoodLifers, Mindy’s new book is even better then her first one. You’ve got to go and get it!!
