Apparently, Alex Trebek doesn’t watch ‘Saturday Night Live’ very often. A contestant recently used a reference from a popular ‘SNL’ skit about ‘Jeopardy,’ but it went right over Alex’s brilliant head. Watch the funny video here!
Alex Trebek, 75, made the life of any diehard SNL fan during the Sept. 16 episode of Jeopardy, when he actually said the name “Turd Ferguson” out loud. It all happened thanks to the “Final Jeopardy” answer of a very clever contestant. Unfortunately for Alex, he didn’t get the joke.
Contestant Talia Lavin did not know the answer to “Final Jeopardy,” so she gifted the world with a shoutout to a famous SNL skit. When she didn’t know the answer to “This song, from a 1999 animated film about censorship, had a word censored from its Oscar performance,” she turned to humor for her incorrect answer.
With only $600 on the line, she answered: “What is…The Love Ballad of Turd Ferguson,” adding a “P.S. Hi Mom (smiley face).” Lavin’s hilarious response didn’t click with the longtime Jeopardy host, who didn’t get the reference and read the answer in deadpan form. While she may have lost out on the winnings, she gave the world of SNL fans a gift of gold.
The sketch she referred to is one of many Jeopardy parodies which feature Will Ferrell as the iconic host, Alex Trebek. Norm MacDonald played Burt Reynolds, who wrote his Jeopardy panel name as “Turd Ferguson” and demanded Alex/Will refer to him as that name. It’s a round of Celebrity Jeopardy that’s parodied, which also features an actor as a grumpy Sean Connery. But it’s Norm’s “Turd Ferguson” who steals the skit as Will’s Alex gets more and more impatient with his ways.
Talia, a fact checker at The New Yorker, told E! News that she was shocked he didn’t get the humor in her response, saying, “He was really deadpan and then actually afterwards there is this moment when Alex talks to the contestants, and he asked me who Turd Furgeson was. I was like, ‘They are from the SNL skits about you.’ He has seen them, but said, ‘I haven’t seen them in a number of years’ and I was like, ‘If I were you I would watch them every day.’ I was like, ‘Come on Trebek.’ He just shook my hand… So I don’t think he got the joke.”
HollywoodLifers, did you get the Jeopardy joke about Turd Ferguson?
