Talk about bittersweet. We just got our first look at the final season of ‘Downton Abbey’ in this new trailer. I have a feeling tissues will be needed. Watch!

Season six of Downton Abbey picks up six months later. In the trailer, which is the first look we’ve seen of the show, coming back in January, we see Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) working to start a new life. However, we’re still most excited about those comebacks coming from the mouth of Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith).

Dowager Countess definitely gets the last word. In the trailer, she’s seen butting heads with Isobel Crawley (Penelope Wilton). “So you want to protect your power at the expense of the patients? I want to protect the patients at the expense of my power,” Isobel says. The Dowager’s response? “Then may the best man win.”

The show, which is coming to an end this season, could possibly get a movie eventually. There are no plans at the moment, but EP Gareth Neame did say “it would be great fun to do.” As for ending the show now, well he thinks it’s the right move right now.

The End Of Downton

“Our feeling is that it’s good to quit while you’re ahead,” Gareth said during a conference call earlier this year. “We feel the show is in incredibly strong shape, the scripts that we’re working on for the upcoming season are fantastic and the show is so popular globally. But the danger with this sort of thing is to let it go on forever.”

Maggie Smith informed the public she wouldn’t be returning, even if the show had continued. “They say this is the last one, and I can’t see how it could go on,” the actress, 80, told The Sunday Times. “I mean, I certainly can’t keep going… To my knowledge, [my character] must be 110 by now. We’re into the late 1920s.”

Downton Abbey returns Jan. 3 at 9 p.m. ET on PBS. Are you excited? Do you think the trailer looks good? Let us know all your thoughts!
