Unbelievable! Serena Williams has been eliminated from the 2015 US Open! In a major upset, the No. 42 seed, Roberta Vinci, beat the tennis legend — 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 — in the tournament’s semifinals and ended Serena’s attempt at achieving a Grand Slam!
It’s on to the 2015 US Open Finals! This tennis tournament will certainly go down in history. Serena Williams, 33, fresh off her victory against her sister, Venus Williams, 35, faced Roberta Vinci, 32, in the tournament’s semifinals. Everyone thought Serena had this. But, as Drake, 28, and the crowd watched, Roberta pulled off a HUGE upset, handing Serena a heartbreaking loss!
It could have been -30 degrees outside on Sept. 11 and the seats at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in NYC would still be the hottest tickets in town. Tennis fans gathered to watch Serena take one more step towards tennis glory. Standing in her way was Roberta. They were first scheduled to meet on Sept. 10, but rain postponed their match. When the two finally played, it was an epic match that was nearly two hours long!
Serena needed a little time to first get in the groove. Roberta tied Serena at 1-point each in the first set. But Serena would break away and take the first set with a score of 6-2. Roberta quickly responded, winning the second set, 6-4.
In the third set, Roberta and Serena were once tied at 3-points apiece! Roberta broke away, and Serena couldn’t catch up. She lost the third and final set! Fans were disappointed with Serena’s defeat, but Roberta was enjoying the victory. “Sorry guys,” Roberta said after the victory.”But for me, it’s an amazing moment.” She was a 300-1 underdog in the match! Fans seem to think Serena’s rumored new guy, Drake, could have brought bad luck to Serena when he showed up to the match! Is the Drake curse to blame?
Despite the loss, Serena had a great showing throughout the US Open. Serena was on her way to shutting out Vitalia Diatchenko in the first round before Vitalia quit! Kiki Bertens gave Serena a challenge in the second round and Bethanie Mattek-Sands didn’t make it easy for Serena in round 3. Serena returned to her dominant ways against Madison Keys in the fourth round and met her toughest competition yet when she faced her sister, Venus Williams, in the Quarterfinals.
Roberta’s win comes after a tournament full of hard fought victories. Though she easily defeated Vania King in the first round, she had to go to three sets when facing Denissa Allertova and Mariana Duque-Marino in the second and third rounds. Roberta scored a break when her fourth round opponent, Eugenie Bouchard, pulled out of the tournament. Roberta needed that luck when she faced Kristina Mladenovic, beating her in three sets.
With this loss, Serena is denied a chance to play in the Finals. Had Serena won the US Open, she would have won every Major tennis tournament in a single season. Doing so would have given Serena a Calendar Grand Slam, the first woman to do so since Steffi Graf pulled it off in 1988. Sorry, Serena. Maybe next year?
With this victory, Roberta will now play Flavia Pennetta in the Finals of the 2015 US Open. What did you think about that match, HollywoodLifers? Are you shocked by Serena’s loss?
