What a match! Venus Williams took on 18-year-old Belinda Bencic in Flushing Meadows for the third round of the U.S. Open, and the two battled it out hard. But our girl, Venus, came out on top, and she’ll now advance to the fourth round.
Venus Williams, 35, took on Belinda Bencic, 18, in the third round of the U.S. Open on Sept. 4 and the pressure was seriously on. For starters, Belinda, who’s from Switzerland, was actually the last person to have beaten Venus’ sister, Serena Williams, at a game of tennis so the world watched closely to see if Venus would suffer a similar fate. Ultimately, Venus came out on top and she’ll advance to the fourth round.
Venus defeated Belinda Bencic 6-3, 6-4. Now, if Venus wins her fourth-round match, she could meet her sister, Serena, in the quarters. Could you imagine?!
Prior to taking on Belinda, Venus had already had a somewhat rough go of it at the Open so far. In the first round on Aug. 31, she took on another youngster, 21-year-old Monica Puig, and just barely managed to come out on top. Similarly, in the second round on Sept. 2, Venus squeaked out a win against American Irina Falconi, 25. In other words, Venus seriously needed a win against Belinda to give herself a confidence boost.
So, did Serena give Venus any advice for taking down Belinda, since she had previously faced her? You bet! “We always give each other advice, especially if one of us has played the other opponent recently,” Venus told Yahoo News. “[Serena] will probably give me pointers. She’s got pretty sage advice. I like to think she knows best.” Aw, sisterly love!
Heading into this match, the odds were slightly stacked against Venus, as she ranks 23rd while Belinda currently clocks in at 12th. Also, Venus is actually the oldest female competitor in the Open, while Belinda is certainly on the younger side. However, this is Venus Williams after all, and throughout her career, she’s won seven Grand Slam titles, including the U.S. Open in 2000 and 2001. Belinda, meanwhile, has not yet won a title, and the furthest she’s actually gotten in her career so far is to the quarterfinals in last year’s Open.
Who were you rooting for in the match: Venus or Belinda?
