As the No. 1 seed, Serena Williams is a clear frontrunner to win the 2015 U.S. Open, but that doesn’t mean she won’t face some intense competition along the way! Check out some of the ladies who may give Serena a run for her money as the tournament continues.
Serena Williams, 33, soared through the first two rounds of the U.S. Open, but as the matches continue, they’ll likely only get more difficult for the tennis pro. With players like Victoria Azarenka having major breakout moments in the tournament, Serena might want to start stepping her game up!
The 33-year-old tennis star is on a mission to complete a calendar-year Grand Slam, so she better hope none of these ladies get in her way! Although No. 3 seed Maria Sharapova pulled out of the tournament because of an injury, there’s still some real threats left that could hinder Serena — whose book you can buy here — from taking the title. Victoria has beaten Serena before, and is actually the only player to have taken Drake’s rumored GF to three sets twice in any of her 23 Grand Slam match wins this year. Serena and Victoria could only possibly meet in the finals, if they both make it that far, and if they do…we can expect an INSANE match.
Besides Victoria, there’s also Belinda Bencic, an 18-year-old form Switzerland who served Serena her most recent loss, 19 days ago in Toronto. Interestingly, Belinda will take on Venus Williams in the third round, so it’s up to Serena’s big sis to take the up-and-comer out before she has to face her! If they do meet, though, it will be in the quarterfinals on Sept. 8. Plus, let’s not forget that Venus, herself, could always power through and pull out some W’s, although, historically, Serena has won far more often in their match-ups.
Samantha Stosur has dominated her competition in the first two rounds, and has a history with Serena in the Open — she pummeled her 6-2 and 6-3 in the tournament four years ago! Their only possible meeting is in the finals, but that would be another epic match if it happens.
