That’s more like it! After a rough victory in the second round of the 2015 US Open, Serena Williams returned to her dominating form. She defeated Bethanie Mattek-Sands, 3-6, 7-5, 6-0, and she’ll advance to the next round!
Wow. Serena Williams, 33, is now five wins away from tennis history at the 2015 US Open. After a scary second round match against Kiki Bertens, 23, Serena rebounded back to dominate her match against Bethanie Mattek-Sands, 23. Serena’s victory takes her even closer to completing a Grand Slam!
Tennis fans were treated to another great match-up at Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York on Sept. 4. They witnessed Serena and Bethanie meet in the third round of the last Major tournament of the 2015 season.
Serena had a bit of trouble in the third round on Friday — she dropped the first set against Bethanie but came back to win the match 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.
Wow! Serena was given a run for her money when she faced Kiki in the second round, despite the Dutch player being ranked #110 in the world. Unlike Kiki, Bethanie came into the match with some impressive wins under her belt. She is a four-time Grand Slam tournament winner – but in doubles. She and Lucie Safarova won the 2015 Australian Open and the 2015 French Open and she’s the #3 ranked doubles player in the world!
Serena now advances to the fourth round – or the “Round of 16.” She’s so close to having her Grand Slam, she can taste it! If Serena survives the Round of 16, steamrolls through the quarter and semifinals and wins the US Open, she will have a Calendar Grand Slam. That means she’ll have won every Major tennis tournament in a single season. Serena captured the Australian Open, won the French Open and dominated Wimbledon. She just needs to take the US Open and she’ll be the first woman to complete a Grand Slam since Steffi Graf in 1998.
