If you have dark circles under your eyes even after you’ve had a full eight hours of sleep, they may not be the result of fatigue. Here’s what’s really causing them and how you can get rid of them for months at a time.
Dark circles don’t have to be an unavoidable part of your life, if you suffer from them. There’s a new technique available for banishing those circles, according to dermatologist Dr. Bruce Katz, the founder of Juva Skin Center in NYC. So put away your concealer stick and listen up.
First of all, here’s the real reason that you get circles: it’s because you have “deep tear troughs” under your eyes. They’re like little depressions and they cause shadowing, which makes it look like you have dark circles. “Women in their twenties can get dark circles because of their genetic makeup, the way their face is developed,” Dr. Katz says.
Fortunately, there’s a groundbreaking technique which banishes circles, utilizing hyaluronic acid filler, which is injected into the under eye area. Hyaluronic acid is a “natural component of skin”, says Dr. Katz. It’s also known as Restylane® Silk, and is injected into the skin, “filling in the depression then becoming incorporated into the tissues”. It’s a completely safe and painless process: “You inject a little Restylane into the tear trough after applying numbing cream. You don’t feel anything. It’s very safe, and nothing touches the eye.” Of course, you have to be careful with the eyes than other parts of the face, but you won’t find any needles here: “It doesn’t use a needle, but a cannula, which is a tiny microscopic hollow tube. You don’t want to be using sharp needles near there,” Dr. Katz explains. Phew!

As for why this is the favorite filler for top doctors? “It’s a very fine, smooth filler,” he says. “It’s a very delicate area — you have to be very precise. This filler is finer than other products.” The result is instant, and the entire procedure only takes 10 minutes. There’s also “no swelling” or downtime afterwards, and a session, which costs $800-$1000, lasts about a year and a half. If you’re hesistant to try a procedure like this, Dr. Katz assures us that the worst case scenario is a little bruising. The procedure is also extremely reversible, so in “the rare case someone has a reaction to the acid, there’s an enzyme that dissolves it that makes it go away [in 2-3 days],” Dr. Katz says. “But I’ve never had to do that!”
There you have it: You can take away dark circles with a 10-minute procedure that really has no downtime. Incredible!
