Is Piper really dead? Did Brandon James ever die? These are just a few of the questions we asked ‘Scream’s executive producer Jill Blotevogel, following the epic Sept. 1 season finale. See her answers to every burning question we had after the killer’s identity was finally revealed!
If you were left wanting more after the Sept. 1 season finale of Scream — just like we were — then you’re in luck! Executive producer Jill Blotevogel talked to HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY and spilled the deets on that crazy conclusion and what’s head in Season 2!
HollywoodLife: Is Piper (Amelia Rose Blaire) really dead?
Jill Blotevogel: Piper is really dead. That’s not to say you won’t see her in some flashbacks or in some prerecorded podcast. Because of the nature of who she is, there’s certainly a chance that you’ll be hearing from her again, but yes, she is dead.
HL: Is Brandon James dead?
JB: Brandon James is an ongoing mystery. He haunts the pilot and he will continue to haunt this series, as we try to get to the truth of what happened and Piper gives us one of the dominoes that Brandon started in motion, but there are a lot of other mysteries that are still kind of being revealed, where he’s concerned. And so I think that’s something that we will continue to dive into in future seasons.
HL: Cassie James said that Brandon had a “boy” or a son. Is there any truth to that?
JB: I will say that Cassie James was working with Piper… Piper told her who she was and said, ‘This is what I need from you.’ So Cassie was a bit complicit in what happened. That was the intention.
HL: Going into Season 2, are we going to be introduced to new characters?
JB: The plan is finding a balance between, just like what the movies had to do. The thing with the cast that we put together for the pilot was — they’re a great cast, so a decision was made early on that we didn’t want to kill everyone off. We wanted to get to know them more and fall in love with them. So yeah, we will have to introduce some new characters in Season 2. But we will retain a lot of our core cast members. It was very, very hard to lose Riley, to lose Will (Connor Weil), to lose the Sheriff (Jason Wiles). I mean these were characters that we came to know and love. That was really sort of figuring out how Scream would work as a TV series, figuring out who we could lose. But our core cast will be back.
We’re going to see some very real trickle down effects from these events of Season 1. You know, Kieran (Amadeus Serafini) has lost his father, Brooke (Carlson Young) and Jake (Tom Maden) have this new emerging relationship, and the audience has new information about Audrey (Bex Taylor-Klaus). So all of these things will be information that we’re going to pick up when we get into Season 2. How do these people recover and go on with their lives?
HL: How soon will we learn about Audrey’s connection/relationship with Piper?
JB: That will be an ongoing thread — just sort of her, how dark her involvement was. I think people want to believe the best of Audrey, but they also are excited by the idea of her getting some revenge, or having a darker side. It’s that push pull — you want to feel a little darkness in your heroes, and you want to know that she did get a little revenge, but part of you also doesn’t want to think of her as wielding the knife. We don’t want her to be the killer, but then we also would be a little satisfied if she was. So that push pull is going to be a big draw in Season 2 — what is the truth behind what Audrey has done.
HL: Amelia Rose Blaire told us there’s definitely a second killer. So is it safe to assume that Audrey is the second killer?
JB: I think instead of second killer, I would say accomplice. We’re saying that Audrey was involved with Piper, but the only moment we can really know for sure that Audrey was involved was in the scene where Will is kidnapped.
HL: So the person behind the mask in that scene was definitely Audrey?
JB: Um… It’s so funny. I’m sort of trained to not commit to anything. I will say that Audrey was involved and there’s a possibility that was her, but I’m not going to commit to that.
