Miley Cyrus flashed her nipple while changing backstage at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards and now the Parents Television Council is outraged that MTV let this happen. HollywoodLifers, what do you think?
Miley Cyrus, 22, gave viewers a little more than they bargained for during the MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 30 when her nipple flashed across the screen but now the singer and MTV are getting ripped to shreads for it. The cameras didn’t seem to cut away fast enough and Miley’s nipple was front and center for millions of viewers to see across the globe and it’s still unclear if this was an accident. Now the Parents Television Council, who slammed her 2013 VMAs performance with Robin Thicke, is going after her again because children as young as 14 could have been watching.
PTC President, Tim Winter, said in a statement that this was horrible and MTV most likely enjoyed the controversy surrounding Miley’s nipple gate. But he also heavily went after Miley and criticized her motives. It was a little harsh, especially considering that when the camera panned over to Miley she said: “Oh, what’s happening? Oh sorry, my tit’s out?!”
MTV had an opportunity to use its powerful VMA platform to stir a young audience to aspire to something positive and uplifting. Instead they chose to perpetuate blatant sexualization – much of it self-inflicted by the artists – and to celebrate the use of illegal drugs. MTV rated the content of the program as appropriate for a child as young as 14, though most parents of teens that age would find such a content rating preposterous. In the end, the network succeeded in what it wanted to do: stir up controversy without regard to its impact on an entertainment environment that is increasingly toxic for children. Are we surprised that Miley Cyrus exposed herself to millions of viewers, and to more people who will inevitably see the news in the mainstream media? About as surprised as we’ll be if the sun rises in the east tomorrow morning. We had hoped she would have proven us wrong and demonstrate her considerable talent as a performer, rather than rely on her own sexuality to entertain the audience. MTV and Cyrus could both be forces for something positive, but tonight’s VMA partners relied on exposing millions of children to graphic, inappropriate and far-too-frequently offensive content.”
