She’s just being Miley — but was it enough? Tuning in to the 2015 VMAs on Aug. 30, I thought the person who would be the talk of the night would undoubtedly be host Miley Cyrus. But unfortunately for her, the likes of Taylor Swift and Kanye West totally took the spotlight from her — which was a shame, because she was actually a really fabulous host!
It doesn’t seem so long ago we were all picking our jaws up off the floor after Miley Cyrus twerked on Robin Thicke during the 2013 VMAs. But watching the MTV VMAs on Aug.30, you would’ve thought we were back in 2009. Taylor Swift and Kanye West stole the show yet again, between the former winning all the Moonmen and her surprise Nicki Minaj performance and the latter shocking the world with an epic rant and a bid for presidency. Even dropping a surprise album at the end of the show seem to pale in comparison — or did it? If you ask me, Miley was the real star of the VMAs!
It’s hard to pick a moment when Miley really shined — because the choices are endless. From the moment she slid down a rainbow out onto the VMA stage, she dominated the show with outrageous outfits, nudity, and her killer closing performance. But I think what struck me the most about Miley was just how funny she was! Going into the evening, I was really curious to watch how Miley would tackle opening the show without performing or how she would handle segues intro-ing presenters. I’m happy to report that she slayed with some serious humor!
For example, there are very few people who could come up with the perfect comeback after Kanye’s Vanguard Award speech — but she did it! “Now we all know what Kanye West is like on weed,” she proclaimed, before chastising the rapper for not passin’ the goodies to share! (Of course, as everyone in the press room learned at the end of the night, she really didn’t need his stash!)
Then, of course, there was her sparring match with Miz Minaj, who called Miley out pretty bluntly after accepting Best Rap video. Most unseasoned hosts would’ve been completely thrown off by the jab, but Miley stood tall, head held high, and went right back at her. “Hey, we’re all in this industry. We all do interviews and we all know how they manipulate sh*t,” she shrugged before adding, “Nicki, congratulations.”
But while many might consider the highlight of the Nicki and Taylor putting their ‘Bad Blood’ behind them or Kanye’s indescribable rant about ‘the kids’, for me, I’ll always remember when Miley closed the show, dropping over 35 F-Bombs, while performing a brand-new song with a gaggle of fabulous drag queens … before dropping a BRAND NEW ALBUM for FREE! Take note, musicians of the world — THAT’s how you close a show. (And if you still need to complete your Miley collection, CLICK HERE to pick up her last album, Bangerz!)
If we’re using Miley as a meter to gauge whether the VMAs requires a host again next year, I’d say the answer is a resounding yes — and it should be Miley again!
What did you think, Hollywoodlifers? Did she live up to your expectations? Sound off!
