The sixth and final season of Downton Abbey is going to be a tear-jerker. We’ve come to love these characters over the past six seasons, and it’s going to be tough to say goodbye. In the first trailer for the final season, the characters struggle to come to terms with one thing they can’t stop — time.
“If I could stop history in its tracks, maybe I would,” Lord Grantham tells Mr. Carson in the trailer. “But I can’t, Carson, for neither you nor I can hold back time.” Anyone else feel the waterworks coming on? The trailer is only a minute long, but still!
Downton Abbey will pick up in 1925, six months after the season five finale. In the trailer, we see glimpses of Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery), Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael), Anna (Joanne Froggat), Thomas (Rob James-Collier) and the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith).
“This final season very much has a flavor of the end of an era, you know, quite literally,” Hugh Bonneville, who plays Lord Grantham, said at the Television Critics Association Summer Tour on Aug. 1, according to Access Hollywood. The world is changing for the family, and you either adapt or fall behind. “He wants to conserve the best of the past, but absolutely understands that the future beckons, and the question in this series is do they succeed.”
The final season for Downton Abbey will premiere Sept. 20 in the UK. It will premiere in the U.S. on Jan. 3, 2016. Grab your tissues now.
