Singer Chrissie Hynde made some deeply disturbing comments about how rape can be a victim’s fault, while relating it to her own experience. The Pretenders singer’s remarks are upsetting many people — both men and women — who took their outrage to Twitter.
Chrissie Hynde is setting off a storm from people upset and disturbed by her viewpoint on rape. After The Pretenders rocker, 63, said that rape victims “have to take responsibility” for what happened to them, people are outraged, saddened and in disbelief of her remarks. See Chrissie’s comments here, along with the heated reactions.
Chrissie opened up to The Sunday Times about her traumatizing rape experience when she was 21, and how she takes “full responsibility” for what happened. An Ohio motorcycle gang member said he would take her to a party but instead took her to an empty house and raped her. “Technically speaking, however you want to look at it, this was all my doing and I take full responsibility,” Chrissie said. “You can’t f*** about with people, especially people who wear ‘I Heart Rape’ and ‘On Your Knees’ badges … those motorcycle gangs, that’s what they do. You can’t paint yourself into a corner and then say whose brush is this? You have to take responsibility. I mean, I was naive.” When she was asked if the gang took advantage of her at such a young age, she replied, “If you play with fire you get burnt. It’s not any secret, is it?”
Aside from Chrissie’s firsthand experience with rape, she believes that rape can be the victim’s fault. The singer went on to clarify the difference in her mind. “If I’m walking around in my underwear and I’m drunk? Who else’s fault can it be?” she continued. “If I’m walking around and I’m very modestly dressed and I’m keeping to myself and someone attacks me, then I’d say that’s his fault. But if I’m being very lairy and putting it about and being provocative, then you are enticing someone who’s already unhinged – don’t do that. Come on! That’s just common sense. You know, if you don’t want to entice a rapist, don’t wear high heels so you can’t run from him.” She adds: “If you’re wearing something that says ‘Come and f*** me’, you’d better be good on your feet … I don’t think I’m saying anything controversial am I?” Well, we’ll let people do the talking on this one…
Chrissie Hynde is wrong. 100% of rapes have in fact been caused by rapists, not clothes.

The sad thing about the Chrissie Hynde comments are that men have been using that excuse for so long women end up believing it

Chrissie Hynde…just no. It is no-one’s fault but the rapist’s if a woman is raped. Even if she is in her fecking underwear. Jesus.

Dear Chrissie Hynde. NOTHING ever justifies the rape or sexual assault of a woman. It’s the abusers fault only. Love. A Man.

Thing about rapists is that they’re rapists. They don’t care what victims wear. Their impulse is to rape. They’re rapists. Chrissie Hynde
