A terrible tragedy occurred when a gunman shot and killed a TV news crew during a live broadcast on Aug. 26. Many witnessed the shooting as it happened and unfortunately cameraman Adam Ward’s fiancé was one of them as she saw it happen live from the control room.
TV reporter Alison Parker, 24, and cameraman Adam Ward, 27, are now dead after a gunman shot and killed them in the middle of an interview on Aug. 26. The terrible incident was broadcasted live on the air during the morning interview and sadly, Adam’s fiancé Melissa Ott, who is a producer on the morning show, witnessed it from the control room at WDBJ.
It was reportedly the morning show producer’s last day at the station when this terrible tragedy happened. CNN’s senior media correspondent Brian Stelter revealed the news via Twitter. He tweeted, “WDBJ photographer Adam Ward’s fiancé Melissa Ott was in the control room — she saw the shooting happen live.” The producer was going to start a new job in Charlotte, North Carolina and Adam was planning on moving with her, Daily Mail reports. The team had a party earlier that morning to celebrate Melissa’s last day.

Alison and Adam were brutally murdered while conducting an interview at Bridgewater Plaza with Vicki Gardner, Smith Mountain Lake Chamber Director, CNN reports. The incident is currently being investigated by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department. Vicki is also a victim of the crime. She was shot in the back and is in surgery, according to Barb Nocera, the chamber’s special projects manager.
At this time, the shooter is still at large and authorities continue to search for him. His identity is currently unknown, but a photo of the shooter was taken from the footage during the incident. WBDJ general manager Jeff Marks issued a statement during the broadcast:
“It is my very, very sad duty to report that we have determined through the help of the police and our own employees that Alison and Adam died this morning shortly after 6:45 when the shots rang out. We do not know the motive. We do not know the suspect or who the killer is. We do know that the Franklin County sheriff, I just got off the phone with the Franklin County Sheriff Overton, I just got off the phone with the state police, they are working very diligently to track down both the motive and the person responsible for this terrible crime against two fine journalists.”
