It’s been 14 years since Aaliyah was taken from us, far too soon, and Janet Jackson took to Twitter to honor her dear friend with all the eloquent words nobody else could say.
The 14th anniversary of Aaliyah‘s death sparked thousands of tributes, online and off, but nobody summarized the pain and loss felt by her passing better than Janet Jackson, 49. Janet was Aaliyah’s hero, and it seems that the R&B icon had just as much admiration for the “Rock The Boat” singer.
Janet tweeted a photo of a handwritten, heartfelt note that she penned to Aaliyah on August 25. Aaliyah, who tragically died at the age of 22 in a plane crash, frequently spoke about she’d love to work with Janet one day. Tears.
“What I shared with u [is] ever sacred, everlasting [and] it’s pure and it will endure. I love u Aaliyah. #RIP,” Janet tweeted, accompanied by the caption “I know u r there shining down on me. #ConversationsInACafe”
It’s a touching tribute, especially due to how vocal Aaliyah was about her admiration for Janet. It’s clear that Janet has kept this fact close to her heart. “I am a huge fan of Janet,” Aaliyah told Rosie O’Donnell in a 1997 interview. “I try to mention her in every interview because I want to meet her and maybe at some point in my career collaborate with her.”

So heartbreaking. Aaliyah had such promise and talent; everyone who worked with her knew the Princess of R&B was destined to be a massive star. Her life was sadly cut short that terrible day, and her future taken from her. While she never got the chance to work with Janet like she had hoped, her idol dedicated “Come Back to Me” to her in concert shortly after her death. Aaliyah is always with Janet.
