This will get you in some kind of mood. The Weeknd has just debuted his brand new video for ‘Tell Your Friends’ and it is dark, sexy and frankly, a little scary!
The Weeknd‘s new video for “Tell Your Friends,” which the rapper dropped on Aug. 24, is just over four minutes long, but it could easily be described as a noir short film. Directed by filmmaker Grant Singer, it’s really no surprise that the mini-flick features murder and some very blatant satanic undertones. Ya know, your typical music video! Watch the stylistic masterpiece now!
Also very creepily, The Weeknd (whose real name is Abel Tesfaye) is somehow both the murderer and the murdered, burying multiple body bags while also filling them. Oh and while he buries himself, he continues to sing all the while, the plastic covering his face suctioning to his mouth as he inhales. It’s an unnerving image, to be honest.
We find the crooner in the depths of the desert, where he buries himself alive before shooting another man, leaving him for dead. If the song (and corresponding vid) strike a somewhat Kanye West-inspired chord for ya, you aren’t wrong. Yeezus actually co-produced the pulsating track.
Featuring melancholic lyrics such as, “And I miss my city man it’s been a minute/M.I.A. yeah, Cali was the mission/Cruise through the west-end in my new Benz/I’m just tryna live life through a new lens,” the song is meant to represent The Weeknd’s teenage years, growing up in Toronto, a period in which he was frequently homeless and abusing drugs. “As soon as I stepped foot in the city, it was a feeling I got addicted to,” he told Rolling Stone. “Lights, no sleep — either you’re going to make it or die trying.”
What do you think of the “Tell Your Friends” video? Creepy and awesome or just kind of weird?
