What just happened? John Cena and Seth Rollins both killed it at ‘SummerSlam’ in a ‘Winner Takes All’ match. Seth won, thanks to help from…Jon Stewart! Because of Jon, Seth is now both the WWE’s US and World Heavyweight Champion!
We all held our breath when John Cena, 38, and Seth Rollins, 29, entered the ring at SummerSlam, and the anticipation certainly paid off. But no one saw that ending coming! Seth was crowned both the US & World Heavyweight Champion after an assist from his The Daily Show rival, Jon Stewart, 52. What?!
John and Seth nearly tore the roof off the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on Aug. 23 with their epic match. John certainly had payback on his mind. Seth broke John’s nose with a nasty kick during the Jul. 27 episode of Monday Night Raw. Seth was looking to prove that his World championship reign is no joke!
It was a hard-hitting match between these two. Fans thought it was over at John hit his finishing move, The AA, but Seth kicked out! At the end of the match, the ref got knocked out, allowing Seth to cheap shot John in his reconstructed nose. Suddenly, Jon Stewart ran in with a steel chair. Fans expected Jon to blast Seth, but he nailed John in the gut instead! Seth then landed his finisher, The Pedigree, on the chair. OUCH! Suddenly, the ref rolled in and counted the pin!
Seth has now made history, as he’s the first wrestler to be both the US and World champion. His victory also denied John the chance to tie with WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair for the record of Most Heavyweight Championship Victories in pro-wrestling history. Had John won, it would have been his 16th time as champ. So sad, John. Maybe next time!
SummerSlam also saw Stephen Amell, star of The CW’s Arrow, end his feud with WWE’s Stardust. Stephen tagged with WWE’s Neville, and together, they took on Stardust and King Barrett. Plus, while Jon and Seth’s match was for the Heavyweight Championship, the main event was the grudge match between Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker.
Jon Stewart & Seth Rollins: Allies?
We were, at first, so excited to see what would happen between Jon Stewart and Seth after their months of fighting and threats. Though their “feud” started as a war of words when Seth visited The Daily Show, it definitely escalated when Jon had the gall to attack Seth in his home court! Never kick a dude in the crotch, Jon — especially a massive athlete who’s going to show no qualms about kicking your butt if it comes down to it! John aligning himself with Seth left many fans confused — us included!
Can you believe what Jon Stewart did, HollywoodLifers? Who were you rooting for at Winner Takes All? Did your fave take the championship? Tell us in the comments and be sure to take our poll!
