Ryan C. Benson may have won The Biggest Loser by losing 122 pounds, but as soon as the show ended, he found it tough to keep that weight off. Ryan’s weight has constantly been an issue since his win in 2005, but that doesn’t have him down — read on for his inspiring story!
The Biggest Loser has been on for 16 seasons, and Ryan C. Benson, 47, was the first to hold the title for his weight loss from 330 lbs to 208 lbs in season 1. But once the cameras stopped rolling and he wasn’t constantly helped by trainers, he suddenly found himself gaining everything back and more not long after winning TBL. Ten years later, he’s on another weight loss journey, and this time, he’s more motivated than ever!
Weight has always been a struggle for Ryan, a dad of three living in California. He talked to Yahoo Health about his life since The Biggest Loser admitting that he has been “up and down the scale” and that the initial months after winning were some of the toughest. “Once the show was over, I was never able to maintain my ideal weight for more than a few days,” he said. “One thing I didn’t expect when the show ended was that for the next year or so, every time I’d go out to eat, or was in the grocery store, I’d feel like people were watching everything I ate, or watching what I put in my shopping cart.”
The pressure he felt after being on TBL couldn’t have made his weight gain any easier, but he doesn’t have any regrets about being part of the show. He said it helped him learn a lot about himself, including “what motivates me and what triggers me to slip back into old, bad habits.”
Despite the unfortunate follow-up to his big win, Ryan still feels “very blessed,” as his family life and career have been a big part of what has kept him going. Now 295 lbs, he’s beginning a new weight loss journey with a goal of losing 80 more pounds, but doing it at his own pace. In fact, has spent the last six or seven months training for the 2015 Nautical Malibu Triathlon in September — amazing! It sounds like Ryan is making the most of his Biggest Loser experience and is on his way to his most successful weight loss yet. We’re glad to see him back on track!
