It was an emotional moment during Taylor Swift’s Arizona concert on Aug. 17, when sang ‘Ronan,’ about a little boy who died of cancer, for just the second time publicly. And while introducing the song, Taylor was almost brought to tears while discussing her own mother’s battle with the horrible disease.
Fans who attended Taylor Swift’s Glendale, Arizona concert on Aug. 17 may not have gotten to see a special guest like Fifth Harmony or Little Mix, but they were treated to what might be the most intimate moment of the 1989 tour so far. The 25-year-old nearly broke down on stage while singing her StandUp2Cancer ballad, “Ronan,” and openly spoke about her mom, Andrea Swift’s, cancer battle for the first time.
Taylor released the emotional song “Ronan” in 2012, after reading Ronan’s mother, Maya’s, blog about what it was like to watch her toddler struggle for so long, only to pass away at just four years old. She penned the track based off quotes straight from the online journal, and with Maya and her family in the audience on Monday, it was the perfect opportunity to perform the song. The moment was incredibly important, because the only other time Taylor has sung “Ronan” was during a StandUp2Cancer special in 2012.
Tonight Taylor sang Ronan even after that first time she performed it and cried. She was brave and sang it and also in her speech she spoke about mama swift, she sounds like she's gonna cry. Its so sad but also beautiful 😢💖 #taylorswift#theswiftietag#iloveyou#ronan

But the track holds brand new meaning to the “Bad Blood” singer this year — in early 2015, she learned her own mother was battling the disease. “I’ve had cancer hit really close to me in my family…” she told the Arizona audience, but it was obvious she was getting choked up, as she struggled to spit the rest of her sentence out. “Um… and… so because Maya is right there, I’d like for you to give her a round of applause.” She shared Ronan’s story with the audience, and praised Maya for being so open about what she and her family went through. Somehow, Taylor managed to get through her opening speech and the song without completely breaking down, and the audience was totally moved by the performance. Most importantly of all, Maya was totally touched. “I love you @taylorswift,” she wrote on Instagram. “You have my heart for the rest of my life and beyond.”
Taylor Swift Reveals Her Mother’s Cancer Diagnosis
Taylor revealed her mom’s cancer diagnosis back in April, but has remained extremely private about all details ever since. “For Christmas this year, I asked my mom that one of her gifts to me be her going to the doctor to get screened for any health issues, just to ease some worries of mine,” she wrote on Tumblr. “She agreed, and went in to get checked. There were no red flags and she felt perfectly fine, but she did it just to get me and my brother off her case about it. The results came in, and I’m saddened to tell you that my mom has been diagnosed with cancer. I’d like to keep the details of her condition and treatment plans private, but she wanted you to know.”
“She wanted you to know because your parents may be too busy juggling everything they’ve got going on to go to the doctor, and maybe you reminding them to go get checked for cancer could possibly lead to an early diagnosis and an easier battle…” she added. “Or peace of mind in knowing that they’re healthy and there’s nothing to worry about. She wanted you to know why she may not be at as many shows this tour. She’s got an important battle to fight.”
