It’s the weirdest ‘Saturday Night Live’ reunion ever! Since May 2015, Darrell Hammond has portrayed Colonel Sanders in commercials for Kentucky Fried Chicken. Now, he’s been replaced by fellow former-‘SNL’ cast member, Norm Macdonald! Click to see!
No, this isn’t a lost sketch from the 1996 season of Saturday Night Live. Norm Macdonald, 51, is Kentucky Fried Chicken’s new Colonel Sanders. The Dirty Work comedian has taken over the role from another SNL alum, Darrell Hammond, 59, in a new round of weird and oddly funny commercials for KFC.
Darrell began to appear as the KFC’s famed founder and mascot in a May 2015 ad campaign, as the fast food chain wanted to “pay homage to KFC’s history,” the company said in an Aug. 17 press release. Darrell seemed like a perfect fit, since he was known for his impressions during his near 15-year stint with SNL. In fact, Darrell reportedly held the record for most impersonations with 107, until Kenan Thompson broke the record in 2014.
Well, Darrell has been surpassed again. Norm has taken Darrell’s job in KFC’s new advertising campaign that sees Norm’s version of the Colonel call out Darrell’s Colonel as an impostor! He does this while promoting KFC’s new $20 Family Fill Up Meal as well as the individual $5 Fill Up Meal. It all seems like a strange SNL sketch that’s selling two pieces, a biscuit, a side, a drink and a cookie for five bucks. But to a hungry person, that’s a deal!
“For the first ads, we rebooted things that made Kentucky Fried Chicken the most favorite chicken brand in the world,” KFC Chief Marketing Officer Kevin Hochman said in the press release. “And the new set of ads are more of that same homage to the things that made Kentucky Fried Chicken such an important part of American families.”
We’ll have to see which former-SNL member KFC gets to replace Norm for the next round of commercials. Maybe Dana Carvey, Tim Meadows or possibly Cheri Oteri? It’s 2015 — it’s time for a woman Colonel! If she’s busy, maybe someone can see what Jim Brewer is doing?
What did you think of Norm’s turn at the Colonel, HollywoodLifers? Who do you think should replace him? Leave your ideas below.
