In the upcoming film, ‘Carol,’ Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara will fall for each other– hard. Watch a first romantic trailer!
Carol, which will hit theaters on Nov. 20, will star Oscar winner Cate Blanchett in the titular role, bringing to life one half of a budding lesbian relationship in 1950s New York. Rooney Mara will portray the 20-year-old whom Cate begins to fall for, and we will see the two as they struggle during a time in which lesbianism was not just frowned upon, it was unheard of. Coming to us from esteemed director, Todd Haynes (whose work you’ll know from I’m Not There), the film is sure to be a stylistic masterpiece. Check out a gorgeous– and devastating– first look!
The film is actually an adaptation of a book by Patricia Highsmith called The Price of Salt, which was published back in 1952. Both the film and novel follow Carol, a Manhattan socialite who’s found herself stuck in a terrible marriage, and Therese (Kate), a working class employee at a department store.
Along with the two leads, Carol will also star Kyle Chandler, Sarah Paulson, Jake Lacy, Cory Michael Smith, Carrie Brownstein and John Magaro. Just in time for awards season, the film will be brought to us by The Weinstein Company, and is almost certain to generate some heat.
Carol actually first debuted at the Cannes Film Festival back in May, and received generally rave reviews. In fact, Kate went on to win an award for best actress at the festival, casting a pretty huge veil of hope over her oscar hopes.
Alas, we are obviously getting ahead of ourselves (and the February, 2016 Oscars). For now, enjoy this first glimpse at the epic romance tale, and let us know what you think! Will you see Carol?
