How is this for a slam dunk? NBA legend and ‘Trainwreck’ star LeBron James has pledged over $40 million to help send thousands of kids to college for free. Read about LeBron’s generous offer right here!
LeBron James, 30, is putting his money up for a good cause. The Cleveland Cavaliers star has promised full scholarships to University of Akron for every student in his “I Promise” program who meets the requirements. This means that thousands of deserving kids will get to go to college for free.
LeBron is teaming up with the University of Akron to provide full college scholarships for kids in his “I Promise” program, which challenges kids to attend college and graduate. The scholarship will cover tuition and service fees at Akron, which are now around $9,500 a year, according to ESPN. The new initiative could benefit as many as 2,300 kids, the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
“Every single kid who finish[es] my program will go to college for FREE!” LeBron, an Akron native, tweeted Aug. 13.
Requirements for those who aim to qualify for the scholarship have yet to be finalized, but ESPN reports that prospective students would have to graduate from an Akron public high school and meet various standardized testing and community service criteria. This year’s 7th grade class is the first eligible group for the scholarships, who will graduate high school in 2021! That seems like ages away!
James’ kind gesture comes at a time of need for the University of Akron, who are said to be deep in financial debt and recently made around $40 million in cuts. But because of LeBron’s actions, UA is changing the name of its education program to his LeBron James Family Foundation.
“These students have big dreams, and I’m happy to do everything I can to help them get there,” LeBron divulged at an event in honor of the program on Aug. 13. “They’re going to have to earn it, but I’m excited to see what these kids can accomplish knowing that college is in their futures.”
