This is remarkable. In the new film, ‘About Ray,’ Elle Fanning completely transforms into the role of a transgender teen in the process of transitioning from female to male, and this first trailer will probably leave you breathless.
In About Ray, which will hit theaters on Sept. 18, Elle Fanning, 17, is stepping into the spotlight as a transgender teen named Ray, transitioning from the female he was born as, Ramona, to the male he is. In this just-released trailer, we see Ray, along with his mother (a luminous Naomi Watts) cope with the implications of the prescient subject matter that is the trans movement, and the toll it takes on Ray who, at the end of the day, is just a teenager, struggling to become who he is. Watch the stunning trailer!
“There may be mood swings, and you will see a drop in your menstrual cycle.” “Thank God,” Ray retorts in response to the process of his physical transition from female to male.
Along with the logistical aspects of transitioning from one gender to another, the film will also tackle the emotional distress which can accompany a transition, as well as the confusion of those who do not understand. “Why can’t she just be a lesbian?” Ray’s grandmother (Susan Sarandon) asks his mother at one point. “Because she’s not a lesbian, mom. She’s a boy,” Ray’s mother responds, informatively.
Ray’s estranged father (The OC‘s Tate Donovan) is another person in the teen’s life whom Ray must work to convince that his transition is neither a phase nor period of adolescent confusion. “Prolonging this doesn’t keep me being a girl any longer,” he explains. “It just keeps me from being who I really am.”
So, what are your thoughts on the About Ray trailer? Do you think Elle will give a good performance?
